Live-In Program

View on Facebook

The Lower Allen Fire Company No. 1 is actively seeking motivated college students and working professionals to join our Live-In Program. Conveniently located less than 10 miles from several institutions—including Harrisburg Area Community College, Messiah University, Central Penn College, Harrisburg University, Temple University, and others. Members of our Live-In Program have access to dedicated living quarters at both of our stations.

In partnership with the Lower Allen Township Department of Public Safety, our Live-In Program is continuously evolving to provide valuable opportunities for those pursuing a future in the fire service. We currently offer a tuition reimbursement program with a stipend for qualified participants. Simply put, we support your education financially while also providing housing—allowing you to focus on your studies without the burden of maintaining outside employment. Our goal is to help you succeed academically while gaining hands-on experience, building confidence, and developing strong camaraderie within the department.

Many of our former live-ins have successfully transitioned into full-time firefighting careers both within and beyond Central Pennsylvania.

Why Join the Lower Allen Fire Department

Lower Allen Fire Department responds to more than 800 incidents annually from its two stations and regularly provides mutual aid to surrounding municipalities. The township includes four major highways and a wide range of occupancies, including residential neighborhoods, apartment complexes, a state correctional facility, warehouses, trucking terminals, commercial centers, and rural areas.

Serving a population of over 17,000 residents across approximately 10 square miles—along with a significant daytime workforce—our members gain experience across a diverse and active response area.

When not responding to emergencies, our focus is on delivering the highest level of fire protection through a strong commitment to training and professional development. We offer:

  • Weekly daylight and evening training sessions
  • Multiple certification opportunities throughout the year
  • Access to a wide range of fire service training programs in the region

In addition, we are deeply committed to community engagement through our Fire Prevention and Education initiatives. These include annual Fire Prevention Week activities and an ongoing smoke detector campaign that began in 2008. Our members play an active role in keeping Lower Allen Township a safe place to live and work.
